Ancient DNA Lab Training

Abstract

The Ancient DNA Lab at The University of Texas at Austin, led by Dr. Melissa Kemp and managed by Dr. Lauren Springs, embarked on a project to revamp its training program to improve efficiency, safety, and trainee retention. This report evaluates a mobile-first microlearning strategy developed for the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) to better prepare students for the lab and reduce reliance on in-person training. The project created microlearning modules for online use and was complemented by physical job aids.

Results

Results indicated positive feedback on learner confidence and accessibility, with slightly better and mixed results between mobile and computer users. At the very least, the mobile experience was not shown to be worse than that of those who accessed learning via computer.  However, the sample size was small, limiting statistical significance.

360 Virtual Lab Tour

Learners are oriented to aDNA lab with 360 images and hotspots developed in Articulate Rise and embedded on Canvas.

Personal Protective Equipment

To meet the needs of the learner, I developed a new color-coded system that was reinforced with printed lables, a poster with QR code to a step by step video.

DALL·E 3 generated poster inspired by the 1942 "Rosie the Riveter" painting by J. Howard Miller.

Video used in both the Canvas training and separately through a QR code posted in PPE donning area.
